Indigo Seahorse Adventures is our greatest example of community led conservation. Your experience helps protect seahorses in the Vilanculos Bay. It was started by the Mangalisse Village Fisheries Council as an alternative to seahorse poaching which was decimating the local population of this charismatic species. Indigo means seahorse in the local language.

We will transport you from your lodge to the village where you will be greeted by the fishers and embark on a local dhow to head out to the seahorse habitat to snorkel in shallow waters. The local guides will help you find them among the seagrasses. Every trip encounters several of them, and there are more sightings as tourism increases over the years!

After snorkeling, you will head back up to the village where you will be treated to a typical local lunch, which may include crabs caught along the way! The species that we encounter in Vilanculos are flagged as “vulnerable and declining” on the IUCN red list. Initiatives like these are critical for the viability of their species globally!
