Health & Safety in Vilankulo

Your safety and well-being are our priority. Vilankulo is a welcoming and generally safe destination, but as with any trip, a little preparation goes a long way

Health Tips

  • Stay hydrated – The Mozambican sun can be strong, especially between 10am and 3pm. Drink plenty of bottled or purified water.
  • Sun protection – Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and bring sunglasses to protect against UV rays.
  • Mosquito precautions – Vilankulo is in a malaria area. Speak to your doctor about malaria prophylaxis before you travel, and use repellent in the evenings.
  • Travel insurance – Ensure you have cover for medical emergencies, evacuation, and water activities.
  • Local clinics & hospitals – Vilankulo has a rural hospital and private clinics for minor issues. For more serious treatment, evacuation to Maputo or South Africa may be necessary.

Safety Tips

  • Beach safety – The tide can change quickly; ask locals before swimming or going far out on sandbanks.
  • Water activities – Always use licensed operators for boat trips, diving, or kite surfing, and make sure safety gear is provided.
  • Valuables – Keep passports, cash, and electronics secure in your accommodation’s safe.
  • Night travel – Avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas; use trusted taxis or transfers.
  • Road safety – If driving, watch for pedestrians, animals, and potholes, especially at night.
